About Us

Lura is the President of Lusco Farms. She had horses when she was younger and although life brought her to the city she never lost her love for horses. She is dedicated to helping neglected horses live out their lives with dignity and honor. We started our rescue in 2008 in the attempt to help whenever possible. We currently have 4 rescued horses and have space for more.

Scott is the Vice President of Lusco Farms. He had no experience with horses prior to the creation of Lusco Farms but Lura and Scott have learned, loved and laughed together as they started to build this horse sanctuary.

Stephanie Shehan - Stephanie helps groom the horses and donkeys. She is also our office person. "Dad isn't very good at keeping that paperwork stuff together."

Josh Butler- Josh is the manager of Lusco Farms. Josh has been working with the donkeys and horses. He does a great job bonding with the animals and earning their trust. Josh also works with our volunteers at Lusco Farms.

Alex Shehan - Alex is our fund raising team champ! Alex and a few of her friends are always coming up with ideas on how to raise money for the donkeys and horses. Some how its seems commisson based as dad has to always give a percent back to them! HMMM???

Company history

2005 Lura and Scott moved from Omaha to Mills county Iowa with a plan to do something for suffering and mistreated equines. They started saving their money and when the time was right they gathered up family and friends to help build Lusco Farms.

2006 ground was broke for the barn and over the next 4 years electricity was added, stalls and other improvements were made to the barn. Later in the same year the first forever resident was brought to Lusco Farms. Mr. Banks was surrendered from a riding camp. The camp felt it would be best if Mr. Banks retired.

2008 A local farmer and seed dealer donated the seed and planted a beautiful brome pasture. More fence was installed and other improvements were made. A trailer was purchased to assist in getting equines to the vet for check ups.

2010 - A minature donkey, a pony  and an 18 year old mare came to Lusco Farms and joined the family.

Where did the name come from?
Good question -
Lusco is a combination of Lura and Scott. They are in this endeavor together all the way down to the name.
